Do I need a thermometer if my Ooni oven has a built-in analogue thermometer?
Yes — the built-in analogue thermometers on models such as the Karu 12G and Karu 2 measure the ambient air temperature inside the oven, not the surface temperature of the baking stone. The stone temperature is what actually determines whether a pizza will cook correctly. A stone that reads 450°C on an infrared thermometer will cook a pizza base through in 60 seconds; ambient air at a similar temperature does not guarantee the stone is at the same level, particularly early in the preheat or during the recharge period between cooks. The infrared thermometer gives you the direct stone reading that the analogue thermometer cannot provide.
What temperature should my Ooni stone be before I launch a pizza?
For a classic Neapolitan-style pizza cooking in 60 seconds, the stone should ideally read between 430°C and 500°C (800°F–930°F). For the perfect pizza that cooks in 60 seconds, aim for around 400°C (752°F) as a minimum — below this the base will take longer to cook and may not develop the characteristic crisp, spotted texture. The colour-coded display on the Ooni thermometer makes this easy to read at a glance, changing colour as the stone approaches and reaches the ideal baking range.
Can this thermometer be used with all Ooni oven models?
Yes — the Ooni Digital Infrared Thermometer is compatible with all Ooni pizza oven models, including the Koda 12, Koda 2, Koda 2 Pro, Fyra 12, Karu 12G, Karu 2, Karu 2 Pro, and Volt 2. It is particularly useful with ovens that do not have a built-in thermometer, such as the Koda 2 and Fyra 12. The adjustable emissivity setting also allows it to be used to check the temperature of the Ooni Grizzler Plate and other cast iron accessories before cooking meat, fish, and vegetables.
