What is the difference between the HORL® 3 Oak and the HORL® 3 Cruise?
While both share the 15° and 20° angles, the HORL® 3 Oak is a modular system featuring the HORL® Quick Lock mechanism, meaning you can twist off and upgrade your discs over time. It is also hand-built from natural premium solid wood rather than the Cruise, which features fixed discs and a body molded from ocean-bound plastics.
How do the 15° and 20° sharpening angles differ?
The dual-angle system allows you to adapt to any blade style in your home. Use the 15° angle to achieve a delicate, scalpel-sharp edge on thin, high-hardness steels like traditional Japanese or Damascus blades. Use the 20° angle for a tough, long-lasting edge optimized for everyday Western kitchen knives, pocket knives, and outdoor gear.
Do I need to use water or sharpening oils with this system?
No. Unlike traditional whetstones, all HORL® sharpeners are strictly engineered for dry grinding. Because rolling the sharpener does not build up rapid heat friction on the blade, you can achieve exceptional, professional results without the mess of water or lubricating oils.
How do I maintain and clean the diamond and ceramic discs?
The diamond and ceramic discs are built to endure years of home use. Over time, they will accumulate fine dark metal particles from your blades. To clean them, simply rub the dry discs with a standard pencil eraser or wash them using warm water and a small brush—just ensure you dry the oak wood completely immediately afterward.
